HAWKE is celebrating 28 years of giving wildlife a second chance, thanks to generous donations from the community and from HAWKE members. HAWKE wants to continue to be there to take your calls when injured wild animals need help, but we need funds to feed and care for wild orphaned birds, mammals, and reptiles.
On Sunday, April 26 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., we will be opening our doors for our annual Spring Members-Only Open House under the big oaks at the HAWKE rehabilitation facility in Elkton, FL. At the open house, members can meet HAWKE’s non-releasable animals and education birds , but patients being rehabilitated will not be available. Meet the amazing peregrine falcon, swallow-tailed kite, Poe the talking albino crow, owls and hawks big and small and newly hatched box turtles. See Cherokee the beautiful bobcat, watch the playful river otters, and other unreleasable critters. You can tour the rehabilitation facility, hospital room, ICU unit, see the large wildlife enclosures. Enjoy snacks while enjoying the hummingbird garden and water turtle pond. HAWKE officers, and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the animals, the facility, and opportunities for volunteering to help support the mission of the Humane Association of Wildlife Care and Education which is to rehabilitate, release wildlife and re-educate the public about how they can make a difference to help wildlife.
HAWKE provides two open house events per year as a thank-you for members and so you can see where your funds are going. There is no state or federal support for wildlife rehabilitation and HAWKE depends on your donations to help pay for food, supplies and other expenses. Fundraising events such as these help HAWKE raise funds, raise awareness of the material needs of the facility, and introduce available volunteer opportunities. All new and current members are invited to attend, as well as sponsors of events , and major membership donors ($500 and up) can bring 2 guests. Large donors can also request a private visit.
A single membership in the Association is $25 and $35 for a family (couples and minor children under 18 years old, but not extended family). These donations will help feed our newly orphaned great-horned owl chicks as well as our other permanent or recuperating residents. Of course, we also welcome larger donations to help offset the operating costs for the center, and all donations are tax deductible. There are many levels available to join. Membership includes HAWKE newsletters, invitations to our two open houses, and discounts by mail for HAWKE events.
